Mr. William Thomas “Billy” Baker, of Roopville, passed away on April 8, 2020 at his residence. Mr. Baker was born on July 13, 1962 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina to the late J.C. Baker and Mary Lee Roberts Baker.

Mr. Baker graduated from Columbus State College’s Criminal Justice Program. Mr. Baker's public safety career began in 1985 with the Enterprise, Alabama Police Department. That same year, he began working with the LaGrange Police Department. In 1998, he left law enforcement to work at his family grocery business in Heard County. In 2005. he returned to law enforcement with the Grantville Police Department until 2014 when he joined the Troup County Sheriff’s Department, most recently as a Deputy in the Narcotics Division. While with the Grantville Police Department, Baker received the Medal of Valor for his assistance with a kidnapping victim. Besides his law enforcement career, Baker was one of the first full time paid fire fighters with the Troup County Fire Department in the early 1980’s.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Frank Baker.

Survivors include his wife, Misty Michelle Harrison Baker of Roopville; sons, Brandon Thomas Baker and Dustin Taylor Baker; grandchildren, Lane Thomas Baker, Paige Cheyanne Baker and Lorelai Dixie Baker; brother, Jerry Carlton Baker of Bend, Oregon; sisters, Alice Karen Baker of Roopville and Carol Holder of Franklin; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Due to the current health crisis, a private family graveside service will be held on Friday, April 10, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Unity Baptist Church in Roopville. A full memorial service celebrating Mr. Baker’s life will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to the funeral home at Higgins LaGrange Chapel, 706-884-7117.

Sorry to hear of Billy's passing. I met Billy when he was with the Troup County fire department. I was involved in the volunteer side of it from the beginning. He was one of a kind and will be missed by many. Prayers and thoughts are with the family. RIP BILLY!
