James H. (Jim) Fulford, beloved husband and father, died July 21, 2020 at the WellStar West Georgia Hospice. He was born in Shellman, Georgia to Effie Mae and Matthew Fulford and spent his childhood in Cuthbert, Georgia, graduating from Cuthbert High School.

After high school graduation, Jim received an Associate degree from Georgia Southwestern College, where he excelled both academically and athletically, having been inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honorary scholastic fraternity and selected to the All-State Basketball Team in 1953.

He attended the University of Georgia and transferred to Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) earning a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1956.

After college graduation Jim enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his county in the 530th Missile Battalion. He was posted to several bases stateside before being transferred to Mainz, Germany, where he completed his Army service.

Upon his discharge from the Army, Jim began his career as an educator at Westside Junior High School in LaGrange. While teaching there, he earned a Master’s of Education degree from Georgia Southern College.

Jim began teaching U.S. History and Economics at LaGrange High School in 1962, where he taught and served as Assistant Principal until his retirement in 1991. During his tenure at LaGrange High School, he earned a Six-Year degree from Auburn University and an Administrative degree from Auburn University. He was employed by the LaGrange schools his entire professional career of thirty-two years.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Leila Smith Fulford, a daughter and son-in-law, Sydney and Kevin Conner of Boise, Idaho, a sister and nephew Mary Nell and Mike Boling, of Marietta, Georgia, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Jim joined The Methodist Church at age twelve and had been an active member of the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange from 1959 until his health prevented his attendance in 2019.

He was a huge UGA Bulldog football fan and was loyal to the team in the good times and the bad.

Jim loved animals, especially dogs, and they responded to his love. One dog appeared at the back door and remained as a family pet for eleven years.

He was an avid vegetable gardener, purposefully planting too much for his family, because one of his greatest joys was sharing the produce from his garden with friends and neighbors.

A private family service will be held at the First United Methodist Church Columbarium in LaGrange at 11:00 am on July 25, 2020 with Dr. John Beyers officiating.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a memorial service for Jim will be held at a later date.

Friends wishing to remember Jim may do so by sending a memorial to the First United Methodist Church, 401 Broad Street, LaGrange, Georgia 30240. Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter Allen Myhand, 506 Hill Street, LaGrange, 706-884-5626.

Mr. Fulford was a great teacher. He was a wonderful role model to me when I started my own teaching career. As a High school student I just thought his class was hard, later I realized how good he was at challenging us and encouraging the best work from everyone. I also came to greatly admire his uncanny knack (as Assistant Principal) to always know who was up to something!
My thoughts and prayers are with the family. He will be missed!
