Jane, my oldest and dearest lifelong friend, isn't a Dorothy. She's just Jane, someone who meant as much to me as a sister. I can't even imagine a world without her in it, even though her illness and the distance between us made it extremely difficult to be in contact. I'll always just see her as Jane who was bronzed, wearing her Rose-Marie Reid swimsuit, and heading to the Ellis Pool to save lives. I'll see the Jane who I counted on to be disorganized enough that she'd be late, so her Mom would drive her to school, and would take pity on me slogging through the snow. Her Mom was always gracious about picking me up. I'll see the Jane who made me welcome in her home and life when times in my teen years were difficult. I'll always see the Jane who invited me to spend the night, even though I couldn't reciprocate. I'll see the Jane who double-dated with me when my husband courted me. I'll see the Jane who walked down the aisle ahead of me when I got married. I'll see the Jane who surprised me a few weeks after my marriage with a wonderful shower (with her sister, Shirley doing all the creative work!). I'll see the Jane who walked in the door and surprised us when my husband and I celebrated 50 years of marriage (I was so happy that I could scarcely stop crying!). I'll always see and remember a thousand days, and thousands of events that we shared. We laughed, we cried, and we wrote, and we talked. But it was never enough. You slipped away this time before we could say good-bye. I love you, and I will miss you, my dearest Friend.
